STAR PINT ruck Jasmyn Hewett won’t spend any time thinking about the Gwynne Medal despite arguably being the favourite to win the NTFL Women’s Premier League award for the competition’s best player.

The 27-year-old former Gold Coast and Adelaide player has been outstanding in the 2020-21 season.

Hewett has been a weapon in attack, booting 20 goals and finishing in PINT’s best seven times.

But it is the work of her teammates which has the skilful tall player most thrilled.

Former St Mary’s star Jasmyn Hewett says Gold Coast Suns set to improve in AFLW competition

The Queenants are leading the NTFL Women’s Premier League ladder – undefeated after 17 rounds – going into Saturday night’s Round 18 blockbuster against her former club, the third-placed St Mary’s.

“I’m not interested in medals,” Hewett told the NT News.

“I love playing for this team, and we’re so big on inclusiveness.

“It’s such a united team – our club’s supporters, sponsors, coaches and committee have really got behind us players.

“As a result we’re all in a great headspace and every player is playing with confidence at the moment.

“And we’ve been really fortunate that great players like Amy Chittick, Gemma Cusack and Rebecca Pryer have come across from Waratah.

“(Former Carlton AFLW player) Reni Hicks has also been very good for us after coming up from Victoria.”

Hewett is rapt at the way the Women’s Premier League has become more competitive every season, typified by PINT’s undefeated run after falling short in last season’s finals series.

That is her overriding feeling going into Saturday night’s clash against the Green Machine.

Despite Saints being her former club, the game carries no extra significance for her.

“Saints have done really well this season and I love watching their younger players come through,” Hewett said.

“They’ve got really strong under-16 and 18s players coming through, whereas at PINT we’re very reliant on our older players.”

Hewett turned down the opportunity to play another season in the AFLW for the Suns this year so she could keep her job with TIO Insurance, managing motor accident claims for Indigenous people in remote Territory regions.

She is thrilled with her decision, particularly after helping PINT to a 2020 premiership win in the Darwin Netball Premier League, finishing best-on-court in the grand final victory over Nightcliff.

“Everything happens for a reason and I’ve been given some great opportunities up here,” Hewett said.

“I hope to be a part of the process in helping Territory women get picked up by Gold Coast Suns in the future.”
