Replay: PINT v Waratah – NTFL Women's Round 3

The Green Wall stood tall as PINT squeezed the life out of rivals Waratah in an NTFL women’s grand final rematch.

The Queenants, who have started the 2024 NTFL women’s season in the same fashion they finished last year, were nearly unstoppable on their way to a 10.8 (68) to 4.2 (26) win over Waratah.

While they made the most of their opportunities on goal, it was PINT’s ability to constantly cut off the Warriors’ raids that made all the difference.

With Erin Hetherington and Lauren Motlop at the back, and Karly O’Malley patrolling every inch of the Gardens Oval, the Queenants set up the wall and refused to relent.

Waratah had three scoring shots in the entire first half, while their rivals kicked clear with five goals to set up a 22-point lead at the main break.

Amy Chittick led the attacking work of the Queenants, moving well between the midfield and forward circle, kicking two goals of her own and setting up Emily Johnston with a cracking inside 50.

Waratah leader Keirra Zerafa refused to let her team down, and covered more of the ground than any other player, working hard in her defensive 50m, going toe-to-toe with Chittick in the midfield before getting upfront to kick an important goal.

Aggie Singh Lippo showed her X-Factor potential with an impressive performance in a losing effort, kicking two goals for the Warriors and burning several rivals with her fleet footwork.

But she failed to finish the game, leaving the field with what appeared to be a serious wrist injury in the final quarter.

“That was a huge bounce-back from last weekend,” PINT’S Zoe McWhinney

said.

“I think we just worked better as a team tonight.

“We actually played our roles and stuck in the contest and were hungry right till the end.

“Instead of rushing through and just playing an attacking game towards the end, we slowed it down and defended our areas well.”

Putting together arguably a best on ground performance the high-flying McWhinney said the confidence they brought into this game is in part due to their coach Rick Nolan.

“He’s always about learning and growing constantly,” she said.

“He knows and we know as player’s that we are not perfect.

“We’ve got our strengths but we still have our weaknesses and in that we have many areas of improvements. But as long as we are making strong mistakes and going for it, that’s play on.

“As long as we’re not ball-watching and hesitating and we have a crack, if you mess up that’s all right, as long as you get back on your feet and go again and do your best to make up for it.”

Now 3-0 on the season and level with St Mary’s atop the ladder, McWhinney said her side wouldn’t want it any other way, stating that competition is good for the game.

“Last weekend was a very tough game and we were definitely lucky to scrape away with the win,” she said.

“But that result made us that little bit more hungry for today and especially being a grand final rematch, we wanted to make a bit of a statement, and it’s nice to have a healthy and even competition in the league at the moment.

“People (team’s) are on our backs a bit this year and are waiting for us to stuff up, so that too is making us more hungry to keep fighting.”

Preview: PINT, Waratah ready for grand final rematch

The PINT and Waratah women will put on an early season spectacle as they face off in what promises to be a gripping grand final rematch at Gardens Oval.

The NT News and KommunityTV will be there to stream all the action from 6pm, Sunday.

PINT were the victors in the grand final grabbing their second NTFL women’s premiership in three years.

Their form hasn’t slowed down this season sitting two for two, including a crushing win against the Darwin Buffaloes and a narrow defeat of Nightcliff.

Steph Lawrence has been the scorer upfront and currently has seven goals to her name, while Jasmyn Hewett, Reni Hicks and Amy Chittick have all started the season well.

Waratah will be hungry for some revenge and have also started the season well beating Districts by almost 50 points in the opener.

However, despite the talents of the likes of Kierra Zerafa, Brittany Daly and Jenna Singh Lippo they were unable to claw back an early deficit against a formidable St Mary’s in Round 2.

Either way though they will be up for the occasion at their home ground of Gardens Oval and keen to prove they’re still able to take out the top side.

Full replays of the match will be posted here following the game’s finish.

The NT News and AFL Northern Territory have come together in a partnership to livestream both the Men’s and Women’s Premier League games for this TIO NTFL season.
