NTFL 2022-23: Watch St Mary’s vs Waratah Round 17 livestream

St Mary’s scored a point at the death to seal a thriller against Waratah in the Round 17 grand final rematch. WATCH THE REPLAY.

Replay: NTFL Round 17 - Waratah v St Mary's

After trailing for almost the entirety of the match St Mary’s sealed the win over fierce rivals Waratah with a kick on the buzzer.

The match was the first meeting for last year’s grand finalist since Tahs demolished Saints by 101-points in the opening round of the season.

But that was not the case at TIO Stadium with Brandyn Grenfell kicking the necessary, game winning point from the 50 to claim the 12.9 (81) to 12.8 (80) victory.

Everything went Waratah’s way early on with Arnold Kirby dominating the tap downs in the ruck and his midfielders taking every bit of the ball they could.

It was Ed Morris who found the way to the goal first choosing to boot it long, rather than pass it off, under pressure from Xavier Vallejo to seal the opener.

Tall forward Darcy Hope also had a field day early on kicking four goals in the first period, making the most of any mistake from Saints.

However, despite his side’s ascendency in most areas, the season’s current leading goal kicker Jayden Magro was almost completely shut out of the contest by Kieran Parnell.

Some onlookers would have been thinking the match was a repeat of the season opener given the early goal rush.

But a couple of indiscretions, particularly bumps on Saints’ ace Dylan Landt, saw Tahs pinged and the Green Machine were gifted a couple of free shots at goal for Mitch Musgrove

Arnold Kirby in the ruck maintained the early dominance for Waratah, but the score put the wind back in St Mary’s sails.

And bit by bit they found more opportunities taking advantage of their multi-faceted forward line including Jackson Calder and Jack Landt

But ill-discipline cost Saints as well at times, including a couple of slips from Matthew Green, which would keep Tahs in front.

Feelings finally boiled over at the toll of half time with Dan O’Dwyer laying a big hit on Musgrove, who took some time to get back to his feet, gifting Saints yet another goal.

Saints entered the second half with more intensity, and finally got some leeway in the ruck battle through Grenfell.

However, crucial misses in front of goal would instead see Tahs get the better of the opportunities as Hope held strong up front.

It wasn’t until Braxton AhMat and Green teamed up to turn the ball over that Saints got reward for effort with Dylan Landt belting the ball through the posts.

Landt went on to score three goals in the third quarter, a period of play which ultimately kept the Green Machine in the contest.

Kirby and a returning Abe Ankers did take some scores back, but despite all their flair and composure Tahs were unable to shake their rivals.

The play went Saints way once again as Sam Fowler showed his pace stepping Collis and charging downfield to gift his skipper Nate Paredes a goal to tie the game.

Saints probably would have settled for the draw considering the rest of the match, but still they came and on the buzzer the ball landed in the hands of Grenfell.

It was a moment which had everyone on their feet and with Grenfell took the point to grab the win.

“In terms of finishing in third spot, the draw would have been okay,” Paredes said.

“But a win is better, and to see that just pass the line was really relieving.

“After the first quarter I didn’t think we would come back because they’re a good side, but we had to play our best to come back.

“It came down to taking our opportunities and keeping discipline, the first half we gave a few away so we got disciplined, we shut them down and we scored a few goals to get the win.”

LIVESTREAM PREVIEW

St Mary’s and Waratah both have a score to settle when they clash in a grand final rematch at TIO Stadium.

And the NT News will be there to livestream every minute of the game exclusively for you from 4.30pm, Saturday.

Waratah left reigning premiers Saints smarting in the opening round of the season winning by 101-points sending a statement of intent in the process.

But even though they won that encounter their revenge won’t be complete until they’ve got their hands on the premiership trophy.

However, St Mary’s are now a much different side to the one who ran out in Round 1, with plenty of their best players hitting their straps at the right time of the year.

Another battle to watch out for will come between forwards Jackson Calder and Jayden Magro with the latter from Tahs leading the goal kicking count by four goals.
