Darwin Buffaloes brought the tackle pressure and intensity to nullify a spirited PINT outfit at TIO Stadium.
The Double Blues proved they’re one of the sides to look out for in the 2022-23 NTFL season with a 11.13 (79) to 8.5 (53) win over the league’s newest side.
Buffs were in control almost right away with 2020-21 Nichols Medallist Dom Brew hard at the contest to generate quality ball for the side.
It was those efforts alongside the quality of captain Jarrod Stokes and the pacey Nathaniel Cooper which broke the game open.
As a result it was former Carlton and Brisbane star Mitch Robinson who slotted the first goal of the match, and with his second kick he gifted another goal to Liam Whelan.
Despite the early concessions PINT kept matters fairly even with captain Ben Smyth and Damian McMahon active across the midfield.
They were able to get the Greenants forwards into the encounter with Christopher Nield and Leigh Peters both slotting the ball through the posts, before Silver Yousif showed his skill to add a third.
It was the most fluid period for the PINT in the entire game as the Buffaloes back six enforced themselves thereafter.
Every time the Greenants got their hands on the ball the Buffaloes defenders were there breating down their necks and putting on the tackle pressure.
Bradley Stokes, who’s enjoying a stellar season, new recruit Kaine Riley and Hayden Brown were everywhere in defence.
It was pressure PINT couldn’t live with, and as a result Buffaloes through the pace of Jarrod Stokes and their multitude of goal scorer options were able to rack up the points.
And though Buffs weren’t the cleanest in front of goal, their midfield and elite backline kept gifting chances.
PINT managed a brief resurgence late in the game as McMahon, who had been their best all day, moved further forward.
With him forward PINT started kicking more directly down the guts allowing Kyle Winter-Irving and Jett Trotter, who kicked six the week before, to come into the match.
However, by then fatigue had already set in for PINT and sloppy disposals and missed marks meant they were unable to capitalise on their small chances.
Nowhere was that fatigue more clear than in the final play of the match when the Double Blue captain was able to put on the afterburners to zip past two defenders for another forward 50.
“Our focus was to put four quarters together, we did that and it came from our tackle pressure,” Jarrod Stokes said.
“It came down to that pressure and out intensity, whenever PINT got the ball we were all over them.
“Our back six are really holding it down at the moment, Bradley (Stokes) in particular has taken it to another level and that’s a reflection on his pre-season.
“I believe we can go all the way this year, and I think that belief is reflecting in our gameplay so we just got to bring the confidence week in week out.”

Plenty of big names will take to the field when new-side PINT take on a confident Darwin Buffaloes in Round 7.
And the NT News will be there to livestream the game exclusively for you from 4.30pm, Saturday.
PINT pulled off their second ever NTFL premier league win in Round 6 at home against Wanderers.
However, this week they venture across the road to TIO Stadium and will need to prove they can get wins away from home as well.
They’ve got plenty of firepower from goal kicker Jett Trotter to Elliot Chalmers who has been everywhere in the midfield.
They come up against a Darwin Buffaloes unit who have some genuine confidence again in the 2022-23 season.
Former Carlton and Brisbane player Mitch Robinson picked up a massive 44 touches against Palmerston, while Centralian Matt Campbell made a big return last week with a five-goal haul.
Both will be in the action against PINT and will play key roles in what promises to be a big match.
