Keen to retain top spot on the ladder, Southern Districts began the post-Christmas competition where it left off before the break by overpowering Palmerston at Cazaly’s Arena.
Although Palmy scored the opening goal of the match, Districts quickly steadied and led by 12 points at the first break before going on to run out 17.13 (115) to 8.7 (55) winners.
Through the dominance of Matthew Dennis who rucked all game, the hard running mid-field led by Jake McQueen, Jack Sexton and Jye Bolton tore shreds off their opponents and continually pushed the ball forward with accurate kicking and judicious use of handball.
Recruited from Nhill in Victoria and in his second year at Districts, McQueen rose above all others but was full of praise for the ruck work of Dennis.
“Going into the game our number one priority was to play as a unit and follow the ‘we’ not ‘me’ edict and I reckon the group achieved that,” said McQueen.
“I played in the mid-field changing forward today and when I needed a rest I came off although in that third quarter I spent a bit of time on the bench with tightness in the hamstring but otherwise it was good.
“Handball is now a big priority for us and the way we have bonded this year is massively different from last season. Also, Matt Dennis is one of the best ruckmen I’ve played with, and he leads the charge.”
Though out played, and for the most part playing catch up footy, Palmy had its moments especially late in the second term when Orlando Turner led a mini recovery with two goals and the defensive work of Enrique Andrews and Ashton Hams together with the run and gather by Anthony Treacy gave the visitors some torment, but their work wasn’t reflected on the scoreboard, and they trailed by 32 points at the long break.
Districts defence closed ranks in the third and the Magpies were held goalless and while the visitors appeared to ease up in the closing stages of the match, they always held the upper hand.
