St Mary’s have solidified their spot in the NTFL top three after a fierce battle against Darwin Buffaloes. WATCH THE REPLAY.

Replay: NTFL Round 13 - Darwin Buffaloes v St Mary's

St Mary’s have secured their position in the NTFL top three after seeing off a lively Darwin Buffaloes outfit at TIO Stadium.

In the battle of third vs fourth it was crucial for both sides to get the result, but despite falling behind in the opening quarter Saints won the day 14.10 (94) to 9.9 (63).

Buffaloes hit the ground running with plenty of play for celebrating Timmy Eldridge’s 150th match and in memory of Kaine Riley, who the whole league wore black armbands to honour.

Midfielders Tanner Coulthard and Mitch Robinson made an immediate impact gathering the ball and playing important link-up roles for their forwards.

And soon enough after some interplay Joseph Collinson found himself with room in front of goal to strike the first blow of the match.

Buffs had plenty of forward options at their disposal including former North Melbourne player Matt Campbell, livewire Liam Holt-Fitz and Daniel Stafford, playing his first game back with the club.

But while Jarrod Stokes and Robinson held the midfield dominance early on bit by bit the Green Machine overcame the early ascendency.

A Nick Yarran boot through for a goal was the first sign of a Saints return while a returning Jack Landt burst the game open in the second quarter.

There were three Landts on the field for St Mary’s, Dylan, who has become a club stalwart, Jack, who last played in the 2020-21 season, and Brock, playing in his NTFL debut.

Brandyn Grenfell in the ruck used his height to dominate the touches and with Dylan Landt and skipper Nate Paredes in and around the area the ball switched completely in Saints’ favour.

Buffs still had their chances created by some innovative play by their usual guns, including Kokwam Niki, but were unable to create much on the scoreboard in complete contrast to their foes.

Yarran and Joseph Salmon showed plenty of their pace, while Xavier Vallejo also caught the eye with some link-up plays standing out more than once in a midfield full of standouts.

The twin towers of Grenfell and Jackson Calder also found their way on to the scoreboard as Saints brought up seven individual goal scorers.

It was a typical showing from Buffs’ skipper Stokes with his explosive pace and kicking ability that kept his side in the game.

But as tempers flared the Double Blues were unable to create any consecutive chances as they did early on and Saints were always able to respond whenever a score went against them.

“It’s a big win for us, we knew we needed to get this game to put some clearance between us and them and stick in the top three,” Dylan Landt said.

“We knew they were going to come out strong, they had plenty to play for and we just had to weather that storm and grind our way back into it.

“It was pretty good (to play with Jack and Brock), we’ve been talking about it for a while, and we’ve only played the one game together before this one at Sunbury.

“Saints is a family club and to add another family connection was pretty good, they’re sticking around now so hopefully we can win a premiership with all three of us here.”
