Replay: NTFL - Waratah v Darwin (Round 2)

A composed Waratah side showed their class once grinding out an important win over the Darwin Buffaloes at TIO Stadium.

Buffaloes showed their intent from centre bounce racing towards Waratah’s forward 50 doing everything they could to take an early score.

But Tahs, through rebound man Dylan Collis, held strong and were able to reverse momentum through midfield gun Brodie Carroll.

That twist of play allowed Waratah to push the ball out to their end and almost as soon as they got there Darcy Hope scored the opening goal.

Buffaloes, however, held on showing plenty of confidence and a fair bit of pace, particularly from captain Jarrod Stokes, pegged back their rivals.

New recruit and 2020-21 Nichols Medalist Dom Brew was busy across the ground for the Double Blue and gave them every inch of the ball he could, and they led heading into the first break.

However, Waratah, as they did in their crushing win over St Mary’s in Round 1, ground out the contest and burst back in front early in the second quarter.

Ruck Arnold Kirby showed his versatility outside of the contest booting two far ranged goals to keep the scoreboard ticking.

X-factor players Jayden Magro and Kurtley Silver played key roles on the supply chain and Thomas Cree also played a key role in the forwards sealing a few goals himself.

Buffs had plenty of the ball themselves particularly through Thomas Clarke and Stokes, but sloppy play and a steadfast Waratah defence kept points to a minimum.

Waratah on the other hand made the most of every opportunity that came their way taking the game away goal by goal until the result looked out of doubt.

There was still a moment of magic left in the Buffs attack as Clarke showed some skills booting the ball off the ground for it to bounce through for a late goal.

But there was no time left on the clock for that to do anything except dent Waratah’s lead.

“It was a fast game where we struggled to fight on our own terms a little bit early on,” Cree said.

“We just chipped away coming forward out of the backline and I think our deep entries into our forward line allowed us to set-up and really let our forwards get to work.

“Our structure is just really good. At quarter time we needed to go back to basics and reset, and once we did that we gelled together and got the points on the board.

“From here we just need to move forward and keep better and better each week.”

LIVESTREAM PREVIEW

A top of the table clash is in store with a heaviliy composed Waratah set to take on a Darwin Buffaloes side brimming with confidence in Round 2.

And the NT News will be there to livestream the game exclusively for you from 4.30pm.

Waratah looked every bit a team out for vengeance when they shocked St Mary’s with a 101-point walloping.

Now you don’t win flags in Round 1, but you can sure send a message and the Tah’s game plan and composure sure did that.

Daniel O’Dwyer and Dylan Collis will once again be crucial down back keeping their foes at bay, while the dynamic they have through the midfield will decide the score line.

Buffaloes also won in the opening round and will carry plenty of confidence from the victory.

New recruits Liam Holt-Fitz, Kaine Riley and Kokwam Niki added the point of difference the Double Blues have long been looking for.

But they know they won’t have the same opportunities in front of goal they enjoyed against the Muk Muks last week and will have to work a lot harder to close the margin.

If you are attempting to cast the livestream or replay to a television, the best result can be achieved by either using a laptop/computer or a mobile phone.

The NT News and AFL Northern Territory have come together in a partnership to livestream Men’s Premier League games for this TIO NTFL season.
