ESSINGTON captain Lachlan Shipway is expecting a tough encounter against a talent-deep Palmerston side upon the return of the 2020 Darwin Basketball Championship in Round 4 action tonight.

The Cannons currently sit third on the Championship table, losing their opening match-up against a tough Ansett outfit, but then rallying to topple both Ellas Titans and Lightning.

Shipway was happy with his side’s start to the season, feeling it has given import Raymond Jarrett, and newcomers Will Tollner and Tully Hemsley time to gel in the side.

“I thought we played really well. Our match against Ansett really set the tone and showed we had to be serious from the start,” Shipway told the NT News.

“We were a bit lucky after that to face the sides we did at that time which gave our new guys a chance to gel and get the opportunity to play.”

Next up is a Palmerston side filled with strong players, including former Essington standouts Steven and Jordan Sing, as well as class defender and scorer Jesse Bell.

Cannons will be looking for a whole-team effort with second import Elijah Barbour, the current league leader in assists, expected to fire.

“They’re a really tall side with a lot of depth and will look to hustle on the rebounds,” Shipway said.

“It will be tough. They have a lot of guys and that depth will mean they will look to run the ball as much as they can.

“It will take a whole-squad effort but I’m looking forward to seeing what Will and Tully will do, and if Barbour and Jarrett will do their thing to get us the score.”
