FOUR developing Netball NT players got the chance to embrace the sport they love in the Diamond Spirit Indigenous Leadership Camp in Queensland.

Brooke Shield and Danielle Norris, from Darwin, and Kyanne Priestley and Jodie-Rosie Pon, from Alice Springs, spent the last weekend of May embracing the sport they love.

The three-day camp encompassed a range of fields including health and wellbeing, education, social and emotional wellbeing and spiritual support to build strong women.

It is part of Netball Queensland’s Diamond Spirit program, which uses netball as a vehicle to engage, empower and educate Indigenous girls in remote and regional communities across Queensland.

Over the course of the weekend, the attendees participated in a number of physical activities ranging from rock climbing to on-court games with the Queensland Firebirds.

They were also given the chance to explore their future pathways at the University of Queensland and partake in leadership activities.

This was the first time Netball Queensland invited Territory players to the event, and Netball NT executive officer Ian Harkness was pleased to see the quartet learned a lot from their venture.

“They loved the experience. They got involved with the Firebirds and learned plenty,” Harkness said.

“What was great to see was it was two each from Darwin and Alice Springs who got the chance to mingle with their peers from Queensland.

“We hope this is the start of a developing relationship between us and Netball Queensland and will see more of our girls get these chances.

“We encourage these players to go further in their netball journeys and hopefully see more of our up and coming players take these chances as well.”

This event came a week after the Indigenous Netball Carnival which featured plenty of exciting match-ups between some of the Territory’s rising stars.

“We resurrected the event after a year off which can be hard to do so to see 12 teams competing was a good thing,” Harkness said.

“The standard of netball was high throughout and entertaining. The important thing now is to get these girls interested in our rep sides.”
