The Darwin Buffaloes have issued an apology after Waratah player Corey Rich was “vilified” by one of their star players in December.
Key defender Bradley Stokes made hurtful comments towards Rich during their Men’s Premier League match on December 3 at TIO Stadium.
In a statement, Stokes said he took full responsibility for his comments.
“I am sorry to Corey Rich for insulting him and causing offence in any way,” Stokes said.
“I acknowledge the words I used are not appropriate on the footy field or anywhere else.
“As a leader within the Buffaloes, I will help make sure that this behaviour will not happen again from myself or anyone within our club.”
In a further statement, the club said it extended its “sincere apologies” to Rich and Stokes had taken full responsibility for the comments.
“This conduct is unacceptable and does not align with the values of our club or the broader community,” the club said.
“We do not tolerate any form of vilification under any circumstances.”
AFLNT said “conciliation has taken place” and the matter was addressed but it would review its policy regarding vilification.
“(AFLNT) strongly condemns all types of vilification in the football community including when directed towards or coming from our players, fans, staff, and their families, across all levels of our game,” the peak body said.
“While rivalry and competition remain integral in our code, there is no place for vilification or discrimination of any kind in our sport, or in the community.
“Players, staff, and supporters from all clubs across the Northern Territory are on notice, and umpires, match and league officials have been briefed to take-action if they witness it.
“Everyone in our game has the right to feel safe and supported and we encourage everyone in our game to report vilification whether it relates to race, religion, colour, disability, sexual orientation, or gender identity.”
Waratah has been contacted for comment.
