AFLNT received complaints relating to alleged racial vilification and discrimination following the Australia Day clash between Waratah and Wanderers.

SOME alleged instances of “behavioural issues” relating to alleged racial vilification following the Foundation Cup match on Australia Day will be assessed by the league following formal complaints from Wanderers Football Club.

In a statement, AFLNT said it had received complaints from the Eagles following reported incidents and was currently working with relevant parties “to understand exactly what occurred”.

The Gardens Oval match was occasionally heated with several players drawn into a melee at one stage, and a string of 50m penalties issued.

The league said it followed a clear process following any complaints relating to racial vilification or discrimination, which remained confidential including potential penalties.

“There is no set penalty or guideline as to what the parties in conciliation will agree to,” the statement read.

“A failed conciliation process may then lead to an investigation or be referred on to an independent tribunal, which has the power to impose match suspensions, fines and other penalties.

“AFLNT remains committed to building a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment for all people involved in Australian football.

“We do not stand by and let unacceptable behaviour occur from anyone involved in our game.”

Both Waratah and Wanderers football clubs have been contacted for comment.
