A male motorcyclist has died after a car crashed into him in Darwin’s rural area.

The car’s driver was allegedly trying to overtake another vehicle when he collided with the motorcyclist on Finn Rd, Weddell shortly before 5.30am Tuesday.

An NT Police spokesman said the motorcyclist died at the scene and the driver was taken to Royal Darwin Hospital in a critical condition.

The spokesman said the Major Crash Investigation Unit was still at the scene but expected to reopen the rural road by 2.30pm Tuesday.

He said the investigators were urging motorists who witnessed the crash to contact police on 131 444.

Police Commissioner Michael Murphy said the crash brought the NT’s road toll to 24, compared to 46 this time last year.

“We’re working hard under the strategy of Towards Zero to reduce road trauma,” he said.

“Take care on the roads – we’re leading into some school holidays and Christmas and festive seasons.

“Plan your travel, don’t drink and drive, don’t be distracted by devices, make sure your car is roadworthy.”

It’s the latest road death in a horror October with the latest crash bringing the month’s total to 11.

The striking number began on October 1 with six people, including four children, killed in one of the Territory’s worst ever road disasters on the Stuart Highway.

The head-on crash involved the Mitsubishi, containing the six people, swerving into the path of an oncoming truck.

The two people in the truck were able to escape with non-life threatening injuries, while the car burst into flame as a result of the collision.

Later in the month two motorcyclists were killed within a week of each other in single vehicle rollovers, while a 22-year-old man died in a crash on the Roper Highway.

Then on October 20, a 24-year-old woman died in hospital as a result of injuries she had received in a single vehicle crash five days earlier.

She was driving on Ellery Drive, Alice Springs, with five passengers in the early hours of October 15 when she lost control of the vehicle and struck a light pole.

Woman falls 20m from Darwin cliff

A 23-year-old woman is in hospital after she fell about 15-20m from a Darwin cliff.

NT Police Northern Watch Commander Clinton Stewart said it was unclear how the incident happened at 11pm Sunday.

He said police, the fire service, and St John NT attended the scene on the Esplanade near Peel St.

“The decision was made to stretcher the person up, so she was conveyed up via stretcher and delivered to St John’s ambulance,” Sergeant Stewart said.

“Assessments were done and she was conveyed to Royal Darwin Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.”

Sergeant Stewart said it was unclear whether the woman was alone when she fell.

St John NT ambulance operations manager Craig Garraway told ABC the woman had “heavy leg injuries” due to her fall.
