November 11, 10am: A man has died as a result of his injuries following an early morning crash on the Stuart Hwy.

An NT Police spokesman said the crash was reported 40km north of Pine Creek and critically injured two people about 3.15am Monday.

They said the pair was taken to Royal Darwin Hospital via CareFlight.

The spokesperson at 10am said a 47-year-old man had “since succumbed to his injuries”.

They said the second person remained in a critical condition.

The spokesperson said a crime scene had been established and the Major Crash Investigation Unit was investigating the cause of the two-vehicle collision.

Northern Watch Commander Sean Patterson previously told the NT News police believed the vehicle had collided with the back of a road train that had not been aware it was struck.

The spokesperson said the highway was closed in both directions and significant delays were expected.

The crash brings the NT’s road toll to 57 in 2024, compared to 26 this time last year and 31 for all of 2023.

‘Hit the back of a road train’: Two injured in major highway crash

November 11, 6am: Two people have been “cut out” of a small truck after they were seriously injured in a major highway crash.

Northern Watch Commander Sean Patterson said the crash occurred on the Stuart Hwy 40km north of Pine Creek early on Monday.

Sergeant Patterson at 6am Monday said emergency services were at the scene where both lanes of the major road were blocked.

He said police believed a second vehicle may have been involved in the incident.

“We think (the small truck) may have hit the back of a road train that may not even know they’ve been hit,” he said.

“We’re still trying to investigate the second vehicle involved.”

He said it was unclear how long traffic delays would affect drivers travelling through the area.
