Northern Territory road toll climbs to 28 after fatal cyclist crash in Palmerston

NT Police are investigating a fatal crash after a cyclist was struck in Palmerston before sunrise, with the road expected to be closed until midday.

Updated: June 18, 9am: A male cyclist has become the 28th person to die on Northern Territory roads in 2024 after an early morning crash.

Detective Acting Superintendent Brendan Lindner said the cyclist and vehicle were travelling towards the Stuart Hwy via Lambrick Ave when they collided at 5.55am on Tuesday June 18.

Superintendent Lindner said the driver and a witness immediately stopped to assist the injured cyclist and call for help.

He said paramedics attended to provide emergency first-aid but declared the man dead at the scene.

“Major Crash detectives remain on scene investigating the circumstances of the crash,” Superintendent Lindner said.

“The eastbound lanes of Lambrick Ave from the intersection of Farrar Blvd towards the Stuart Hwy are expected to remain fully closed until at least midday.”

He said anyone with dashcam footage or information should contact police on 131 444 and quote reference P24163632.

The Territory’s road toll stood at five deaths this time last year.

Initial: June 18, 6:20am: A cyclist and vehicle have collided during an early morning crash.

Northern Watch Commander Steve Rankin said the crash occurred on Lambrick Ave just before 6am Tuesday.

Sergeant Rankin confirmed St John NT paramedics were attending the scene.

He said the scene was unfolding, and could not confirm the extent of any injuries resulting from the crash.

In a statement online, an NT Police spokesman said the roads between Farrar Blvd and the Howard Springs Stuart Hwy intersection were closed.
