June 17, 1.50pm: A man has died days after he was struck by a car in Wulagi on Thursday afternoon.

Detective Acting Superintendent Brendan Lindner said a driver had been charged in relation to the alleged hit and run on Friday.

Sergeant Lindner said the 39-year-old man died in hospital since the charges were laid.

He said the driver had been bailed to appear in court on June 25 and would face a hit and run cause serious harm charge.

“Detectives will consult with Director of Public Prosecutions regarding upgrading the current charge before the court,” he said.

“I once again would like to remind all drivers involved in a crash that it is a legal requirement for you to stop and render assistance and then contact and take direction from police.”

The crash has been referred to the Major Crash Investigation Unit.

The death takes the NT’s road toll to 27 for the year, up from five at the same time last year and just four shy of 2023’s entire total.

Two pedestrians struck near Darwin shopping centre

Initial, June 13: Northern Territory emergency services shut off several major roads after two people were struck in a non-fatal hit and run.

The pair were taken to Royal Darwin Hospital, one with serious injuries and the other with non-life threatening injuries.

The Vanderlin Drive inbound lane was closed and drivers were urged to avoid the area surrounding the Hibiscus Shopping Centre following the incident.

A security guard at the shopping centre, who did not wish to be named, said that the person struck was one among a group of Aboriginal people.

He was unsure of the person’s age or gender.

Vanderlin Dr resident Mimi Jong, 51, ran outside when she heard sirens and saw a body covered with a white tarp near the road barrier.

She said she saw a group of three people sitting next to the traffic lights and crying.

“They were just sitting on the ground crying, I think maybe they were with (the person struck),” Mrs Jong said.

Police diversions are in place and delays are expected for travellers in the area.

Traffic has slowed to a crawl down Vanderlin Drive, while the road has been closed between Leanyer Dr and Brolga St.

Police said they expected the inbound lanes to remain closed until late on Thursday evening.

They have also urged anyone who witnessed the crash, or may have footage of what happened, to make contact on 131 444.

It comes as the current death toll on Territory roads sits at 26 for the Northern Territory, compared to five at this stage last year.
