NT Police seeking driver of Toyota ute allegedly involved in Larapinta hit and run, woman injured

Latest, 3.15pm: The driver who first allegedly struck an Alice Springs woman, causing her to fall and be hit by a second car, remains on the run from police.

At 7am on Thursday, reports of a 31-year-old woman who had been struck by two vehicles in Larapinta were received.

NT Police say an alleged disturbance on Lyndavale Drive had caused the woman to be struck by the first vehicle, a white Toyota HiLux ute.

The contact caused her to fall over, where she was promptly struck by a second vehicle.

The driver of the second vehicle tried to help the woman but an altercation forced him to leave the scene.

“He immediately presented to the Alice Springs Police Station and is assigint police with inquiries,” an NT Police spokesperson said.

The man’s breath and drug tests were both negative.

The driver of the Toyota remains outstanding and the Southern Traffic Operations Unit is investigating.

Updated: 12pm: A woman was injured and taken to hospital after an alleged hit and run which closed an Alice Springs street, police say.

An NT Police spokesperson on Thursday morning confirmed to this masthead they were investigating the alleged hit and run which happened on Lyndavale Drive in Larapinta that day.

“A woman has been conveyed to Alice Springs Hospital for medical treatment with non-life-threatening injuries,” the spokesperson said.

A section of Lyndavale Drive between Saltwell St and Engoordina Drive was shut by police in order for initial investigations to take place.

Officers on the scene were congregating around an area where orange cones and brown paper bags were placed on the ground.

The spokesperson said the road was now open to pedestrians and traffic.

Investigations into the alleged incident are ongoing.

Initial: June 13, 9am: NT Police have closed a main road in an Alice Springs suburb due to an “ongoing investigation”.

Police early on Thursday morning blocked of a segment of Lyndavale Drive between Saltwell St and Engoordina Drive in Larapinta.

Traffic was diverted off the road as forensics gathered evidence on the road.

Police on the scene did not say what the cause of the road closure was, only that an “investigation was ongoing” in the area.

Officers on the scene were seen to congregate around an area where orange cones and brown evidence bags were placed on the ground.

Commercial quantities of cannabis found after dog search in Tennant Creek

June 12, 2pm: Police say a 47-year old man has been arrested and more than three kilograms of cannabis seized after a search warrant was executed in Tennant Creek.

Police said that detectives undertook the searches on Monday and Tuesday, June 10 and 11, on “a remote property in the Tennant Creek region.”

Cash and cannabis were found at the property, with drug detection dogs locating a “commercial quantity of cannabis” buried under spinifex bushes, according to police.

Police said a total 3.6kg of cannabis was found in the searches.

The 47-year-old is currently on remand and is due to face Alice Springs Local Court on June 13.

He is facing charges of receiving tainted or possessing tainted property, as well supplying and possessing a schedule two dangerous drug in commercial quantities.

Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Marcus Becker said “police will continue to target to target individuals who choose to profit from this illicit activity.”

Three males rob Alice Springs boy with weapon, steal his bike

June 12, 12.25pm: An Alice Springs child was enjoying a peaceful bike ride when he was stopped and robbed with a weapon by three males, police say.

An NT Police spokesman said the 14-year-old boy had been cruising down Larapinta Dr – near Memorial Ave – in Araluen when he was stopped about 4pm Tuesday.

The spokesman said one of the robbers was armed with an edged weapon and demanded the boy hand over his grey and orange Avanti mountain bike.

He said the trio – one of whom was wearing a red jumper and black pants – fled with the bike.

The spokesman said Strike Force Trident was investigating the incident and urged witnesses to contact police on 131 444 and quote reference number P24157610.

Man charged after ‘particularly violent’ alleged assault

June 11, 2.35pm: A “particularly violent assault” with a broken glass bottle that allegedly left a woman with serious facial injuries has resulted in the arrest of a 29-year-old man.

Constable First Class Caleb Van Duinen said the alleged domestic violence attack took place about 8pm June 5 in Tennant Creek.

“This was a particularly violent assault that has left the victim with severe injuries,” he said. “Such violence has no place in our community, and police will continue to work tirelessly to hold domestic violence offenders accountable.”

Constable Van Duinen said Tennant Creek Criminal Investigations Unit detectives and general duties members executed two search warrants before arresting the man.

He said the man had been charged with unlawfully causing serious harm and being armed with an offensive weapon.

Constable Van Duinen said the man would face the Tennant Creek Local Court on June 13.
