A top Adelaide private girls school is set to open a $3m development including a 27m water feature, gardens and open lawns.

Walford Anglican School for Girls, in Hyde Park, will unveil its completed development on Tuesday, which also provides gathering spaces, three new flagpoles and a glass sculpture.

Principal Dr Deborah Netolicky said the development, called The Heart of Walford, “is designed to be a hub for collaboration and togetherness as well as a calm space where the Walford students and wider community can come together”.

“Ultimately it is our students who will take ownership of this space and fill it with joy and connection,” Dr Netolicky said.

The opening will be attended by Governor of South Australia and Walford old scholar Frances Adamson.

It is the second outdoor space the school opened this year, with a new wonderland-themed junior school playground unveiled in February.

Stage one of the Heart of Walford project began in 2022, with a hall dating back to the 1920s being demolished and a school square being completed.

Walford is also refurbishing its Wait Building to create art studios, new year 12 learning spaces and locker rooms, which is expected to be completed by 2025.

Its next multimillion dollar construction project, which will begin in December, is the construction of the Jewell Pavilion and the refurbishment of the heritage listed Mabel Jewell Baker House.

The more than 100-year-old building, which currently houses an art studio, archives and private lesson space, will house four new classrooms for students set to open in 2026.

It had previously been used as a principal’s residence and a boarding house.
