South Lakes Golf Club announce plans to offer night time golf on a newly constructed mini course

Forget clown heads and spinning windmills – a bold new breed of golf is teeing off in Adelaide’s south, and it’s anything but miniature in ambition.

A regional golf club in Adelaide’s south boasting scenic ocean views is set to increase its already vast membership base by offering night-time golf to players – with a twist.

South Lakes Golf Club, in Goolwa South, has partnered with SHANX to construct an 18-hole mini golf course under lights.

Club Manager Chris Bailey told Golf Industry Central the new course would offer a “fun and accessible activity for all ages”.

“Mini golf complements our existing facilities and provides a new way for families and tourists to enjoy their time at our club,” Mr Bailey said.

“We believe this will not only enhance our members’ experience but also attract new visitors to South Lakes.”

Documents, submitted to Plan SA, reveal 15 light poles would be erected adjacent to the clubrooms in an effort to provide an “incredible experience” for golfers.

The course would be open seven days a week with operating hours of 8am to 9.30pm from Wednesday to Saturday.

On Mondays, Tuesdays and Sundays, doors would shut at 6pm – except during school holidays.

Each of SHANX’s mini courses have been designed to replicate the normal style of a typical golf course – a “unique” concept in Australia, a spokesman said.

“Our mini golf courses are not ‘amusement-based’ with clown heads, windmills and rocks in the middle of putting surfaces, but rather golf as we know it, miniaturised,” they said.

South Lakes was the first golf club to “integrate a holiday and residential community with a golf course”, and has now grown to have one of the largest membership base of golf clubs in regional SA since it was established in 1966.

Social memberships start from as little as $80 per year, while 7-day members are charged just $1995 annually.

The club also offers a range of memberships for juniors and young adults aged up to 35-years-old – boasting a strong junior base with over 30 members.

Sparked by the emergence of LIV Golf and a desire for post-Covid socialisation, some of the state’s biggest golf clubs are now seeing higher registration numbers than ever before, insiders say.

Adelaide women, in particular, are flocking to golf in droves – sparking a resurgence in the sport that some club officials have “never seen anything like before”.

Last year, SHANX opened its second SA location at Little Para Golf Course, in Paralowie, following a partnership between Salisbury council and GreenSpace Management – SHANX’s parent company.

The course at South Lakes – SHANX’s third in SA since first opening at Regency Park in 2020 – is expected to be completed by October.

South Lakes Golf Club was contacted for comment.
