Saint Ignatius’ College has unveiled plans for its largest ever building project, a $20m-plus sports centre for senior students.
The three-storey sport and physical education centre will feature double courts with retractable spectator seating, dugout style change rooms, viewing platforms, and space for students to focus on strength and conditioning, weights and high-performance training.
To be built at the Saint Ignatius’ College senior school campus, in Athelstone, the building will also house flexible learning areas, meeting rooms and a kiosk.
It is estimated it will cost between $20m and $25m to complete.
Principal Lauren Brooks said the purpose-built facility would be named the Magis Centre, as magis means “the more” or “greater” in Latin.
Ms Brooks said it would be large enough to bring the whole school together for special occasions.
“For the first time we will have a venue with capacity to fit our entire staff and student body from all three campuses,” she said.
“Beyond being a centre for sporting excellence the Magis Centre will be a central place that unites us as a community.”
The new building, which comes in addition to the senior school’s current gymnasium, will be built on an existing car park.
The construction plans follow the launch of the college’s high-performance sports program earlier this year, run by lead coach and former elite cricketer and hockey player Deven Bell.
Former Port Adelaide football captain Tom Jonas and ex-netballer Natalie von Bertouch are guiding the college’s athlete development program this semester, and former elite tennis player Sergio Gaoni is leading the tennis program.
