A northern suburbs private school has opened a $12m building featuring a soundproofed music suite and robotics room.

Torrens Valley Christian School’s new primary building brings together students from Reception to Year 6 under the same roof for the first time.

The two-storey building has space for up to 450 students across year level classrooms and shared break-out spaces.

The building also features a soundproofed music suite, a kitchen and a science area where students can work with robotics and digital technologies.

Construction began in November 2022 and the building was officially opened on August 9.

The new building replaced the school’s old multi-use sport courts and a number of transportable classrooms for upper primary students.

Remaining transportable classrooms where junior primary students had studied have been transformed into an out of school hours care centre and spaces for educational support and wellbeing staff to work with students.

Principal Emily Brookes said the new facility was more than just a building.

“Buildings certainly aren’t the ‘heart’ of any school but they can be designed in a way that directs the heart to a wider story,” she said.

“What a joy it is to have a new building that encourages all to participate in God’s story, learning about His world, and stewarding and caring for His creation in the learning process.”

Torrens Valley Christian School inaugural principal Peter Van der Schoor attended the opening of the new building and reflected on how the school began in 1980 with 20 students in a church hall.

He said the original families had raised $88,000 to purchase land in Hope Valley, where the current school began with parent-built log cabins and a playground.
