A man was hit and killed by a train during the after-school commute on Tuesday afternoon, forcing part of the Gawler line to be closed.

Police and ambulance crews were dispatched to Broadmeadows Railway Station at Davoren Park just before 3pm following a flurry of triple-0 calls.

Train services between Elizabeth and Gawler were temporarily shut down as police investigated the scene, but have since resumed.

Metropolitan Fire Service crews were also called with a request for a hook lift.

An SA Police spokesman confirmed a 55-year-old Davoren Park man was pronounced dead at the scene and that a report is being prepared for the coroner.

A nearby resident on Meadows Ln just opposite the tracks, who did not wish to be named, said she saw a man “moving side-to-side” near the railway line before the crash.

“He definitely was not okay,” she said.

“I got home about 10 to three and it was quiet, then at 3:20, I came outside and there were police everywhere.”

The man’s death is the fourth reported instance this year of a train killing a pedestrian in South Australia.

Last month, a 53-year-old man was run down at a level crossing in Largs North after allegedly stealing a bag of sugar from the nearby deli.
