New video unveils drivers-eye-view of Adelaide’s Torrens to Darlington project

This is what it will look like out of our windscreens when we finally get the rubber on the road in SA’s biggest ever transport project. See the video.

A new landmark flyover of the Torrens to Darlington motorway has been unveiled – the first to emulate a complete journey along the full stretch of road.

It coincides with the release of a new Urban Design Strategy, showing design outcomes for all sections of the $15.4bn project.

The 10.5km flyover features the twin tunnels – with a connecting open motorway – stretching from Richmond to Torrensville and Clovelly Park to Glandore.

The project will complete the North-South Corridor between Gawler and Old Noarlunga, creating a seamless traffic-free journey for the 78km stretch.

Once the T2D motorway opens to traffic in 2031, motorists, cyclists and pedestrians are expected to experience faster travel times, improved safety, better connectivity.

A total 21 sets of traffic lights have been removed between the River Torrens and Darlington to cut travel times during peak hour traffic by up to 30 to 40 minutes.

The Urban Design Strategy was fine-tuned by government policies and strategies, local context analysis, and stakeholder engagement.

Preserved cultural and heritage sites include the Thebarton Theatre and the Queen of Angels Church – while up to 350 properties were safeguarded from compulsory acquisition.

Minister for Infrastructure and Transport, Energy and Mining Tom Koutsantonis, said the design “will deliver great outcomes for motorists and local communities.”

“The T2D Urban Design Strategy will ensure new infrastructure is delivered to fit seamlessly into its surroundings and adds value to local communities, which will help us deliver a project that is not just functional, but also visually attractive,” Mr Koutsantonis said.

The tunnels were built underneath the existing South Rd corridor, and about 10m to 30m below the surface of properties in some sections.

Designs for the T2D were completed in December last year, after a comprehensive, independently-verified design and financial review.

Two elevated roadways included in the original design were removed.

Federal Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government, Catherine King said the Australian government is committed to proving our road networks.

“The North-South Corridor – Torrens to Darlington project will deliver an outstanding urban design that provides great journeys for everyone,” Ms King said.

“And will leave a positive legacy of greener, connected communities where people want to live, work and visit.

“This vital project is one of the biggest infrastructure undertakings in the country, and our Government has significantly increased its investment to match the South Australian Government’s $7.7 billion commitment to see it to full completion.”
