A new multimillion-dollar sports park has officially opened, cementing itself as one of the best sports facilities in the state.

The completed upgrades include new hockey and soccer buildings – both with canteens and bars – and a new irrigated senior-sized soccer pitch, delivered through millions of dollars in funding from local, state and federal governments.

Onkaparinga Mayor Moira Were said it was a “proud moment to celebrate a range of upgrades”.

“It’s incredible to think how much has changed here since the state government announced in 2019 that a new school would be built just to the east, and we commenced work on stage one of a game-changing sports park upgrade a year later,” she said.

“It’s testament to what we can achieve when community and all levels of government come together, use our ingenuity and foresight, and join forces to meet the demands of a growing area.

“(The upgrades) have made this much-loved place more enjoyable, functional and inclusive for athletes, sports teams, and visitors alike.”

The redevelopment has seen the construction of a new hockey building with a canteen, bar, toilets and medical room, a new irrigated turf senior-sized soccer pitch with a clubroom, kitchen, canteen, medical room, two unisex changerooms and a function room, a new carpark, sports lights for hockey, bowls and croquet, fully enclosed cricket nets, six upgraded netball courts and two upgraded unisex changerooms for football and cricket.

Federal government funded more than $3m towards the hockey and soccer facilities, while the council contributed $3.265m toward the upgrades.

The state government also gave $945k for the construction of the new sports lighting and upgraded football and cricket changerooms.

One of the next elements of the Aldinga Sports Park upgrade is the construction of a new $1.3m competition-level skate park, expected to be completed later this year.

The new park will include a beginners’ ramp, greenery, viewing platform and shelter, offering a contemporary facility while giving riders a unique skating experience.

Minister for Recreation, Sport and Racing Katrine Hildyard said the more people who participated in sport as a result of these upgrades, “the healthier our community”.

“Sport is so powerful in bringing people together, improving mental, physical and emotional health, giving people a sense of belonging and the knowledge that they are not alone,” she said.

“I am delighted that the Aldinga Sports Park’s improved facilities will help to bring the community together through sport – across soccer, hockey, bowling, croquet, netball, football and cricket to name a few.

“I am very much looking forward to what the future brings for this facility, the clubs, the players, and the community. It looks like a very bright future ahead for all involved.”
