Calls For Caps On Rent Hikes 16/03/23

The Queensland government is facing mounting pressure to intervene against the relentless rise of rental prices, as stakeholders demand annual rent hikes to be capped at 10 per cent, with increases to only occur once a year to align with other states and territories.

Queenslander’s power bills are set to spike by $321 a year in the southeast while those in the regions are slugged $432, with warning of more pain to come.

The distraught family of a pregnant woman choked to death by her partner say the killer’s charge should never have been downgraded from murder to manslaughter “because two lives were taken in that action”.

And the Palaszczuk government is under pressure to release costings associated with the Gabba redevelopment after the Auditor-General told a parliamentary committee the original $1bn figure came from a “press release”.
