Breaking the ice: Meth use in SA

A drug-dealing mother says she now wants to be there for her children after her and an acquaintance were caught with meth, MDMA and a tick list.

Alexis Kate Daniels, 26, and Steven Joe Marlin, 35, will learn their fates next month after a traffic stop uncovered their illegal side hustles.

During sentencing submissions, Christine Hanna, for the prosecution, told the District Court Marlin was pulled over by police at Munno Para West in October 2020, with Daniels seated in the rear seat.

“The vehicle was searched as police smelt cannabis,” she said.

The court heard cannabis was located in the back footwell, which was uncharged, and 33.8g of methamphetamine was located in a hole in the boot.

Police also found six MDMA tablets, $31,120 and a tick list.

Daniels also pleaded guilty to separate counts of drug trafficking after police searched her parents’ house, where she was living, on December 24, 2019 and found 1.08kg of GHB, worth up to $1500.

They also located plastic resealable bags, scales and a tick lists

Police then found 3.85g of meth, valued up to $1500, and 192g of fantasy, worth $960, after a further search of the house on June 7, 2020.

The court heard Daniels just gave birth to a child two months prior, as well as having a five-year-old daughter.

She told the court she was previously addicted to methamphetamine but was no longer using drugs and just wanted to be there for her daughters.

However, Ms Hanna pushed for immediate jail for Daniels, saying there was a “persistence” to her conduct.

Adam Richards, for Marlin, told the court his client lost his job and slipped back into drug use, which led to the offending.

During an earlier bail application, Mr Richards told the court his client admitted to being at large for several months last year, but the bail breaches were for his own safety.

“My client was, subsequent to a court appearance, abducted from outside of court and taken away,” he said.

Mr Richards said a group of men also forced themselves into Mr Marlin’s home and bashed him, making him cut off his home detention bracelet.

The duo will be sentenced next month.
