Alexis Daniels and Steven Marlin charged with drug trafficking and money laundering

An alleged drug dealer will have more freedom while her ‘acquaintance’ co-accused – who says he missed court after he was abducted from outside a courthouse – remains in custody.

A drug-dealing mother will have more freedom on bail while her co-accused – who blamed his bail breaches on a courthouse abduction – remains in custody.

Alexis Kate Daniels, 25, applied to the District Court last week to remove home detention conditions, charged alongside “acquaintance”, Steven Joe Marlin.

The duo are charged with three counts of drug trafficking and one count of money laundering after police allegedly found drugs and cash in October 2020 at Munno Para West.

Carrie Demertzis, for Ms Daniels, told the court her client was a single parent and home detention bail was restricting activities with her daughter.

“Ms Daniels has previously asked for passouts to take her young daughter for a walk, effectively around the block or within their local neighbourhood,” she said.

“That has been refused.”

Ms Demertzis told the court Ms Daniels had been effectively drug free for a period of time, besides returning a positive drug test to marijuana last month.

The court heard Daniels had returned nine positive drug tests since being on home detention bail.

Ms Daniels, of Valley View, had pleaded guilty to one count of trafficking – relating to 3.8g of methamphetamine.

She has pleaded not guilty to the other charges, and will face trial alongside Mr Marlin in December.

“Mr Marlin was an acquaintance, at best, at the time of the offending and Ms Daniels has not had any contact with him,” Ms Demertzis said.

Judge Kris Handshin agreed to place Ms Daniels on supervised bail but reminded her if she kept returning positive drug tests her bail may be revoked, which would be “incredibly distressing” for her daughter.

“Ms Daniels, your bail history is far from perfect and the number of positive drug tests you have returned, is frankly unsatisfactory,” he said.

Mr Marlin, 33, remains in custody after he had his home detention bail application knocked back last month.

During his application, Adam Richards told the court his client admitted to being at large for several months last year, but the bail breaches were for his own safety.

“My client was, subsequent to a court appearance, abducted from outside of court and taken away,” he said.

Mr Richards said a group of men also forced themselves into Mr Marlin’s home and bashed him.

Mr Richards said one of the home invaders made Mr Marlin cut off his home detention bracelet.

“That bracelet was smashed into, as he described a million pieces,” he said.

Mr Richards said Mr Marlin “strenuously defended” all charges against him.

Judge Michael Durrant refused Mr Marlin bail, saying it was a “pretty strong” case against him.

“His record of noncompliance is horrendous,” he said.

“He just isn’t a candidate for bail.”
