A new childcare centre is set to ease waitlist pressure for Sunshine Coast families, promising to deliver more than 130 much-needed places in a fast-growing area.

The Goodstart Early Learning centre in Nirimba is expected to open in April this year, creating 132 places for children aged up to five years of age.

Expressions of interest are open to families wishing to enrol their children in the centre, which is set to open just 500m from Nirimba State Primary School.

Queensland Goodstart Early Learning state manager Kerrin Thomas said there was already been “strong interest” from families as the other centres on the Sunshine Coast remained in consistently high demand.

“Goodstart Early Learning Centre at Baringa consistently operates at capacity, and our services in the surrounding area — Little Mountain and Caloundra — are also in very high demand,” Ms Thomas said.

“The opening of GSEL Nirimba will be a welcome option for families in the area seeking high-quality, not-for-profit early education.”

Ms Thomas said there had been a strong response regarding expressions of interest, which remained open.

The announcement for the Nirimba centre comes after a five-storey childcare centre was proposed for a site in Nambour.

The Sunshine Coast developer behind a popular childcare centre in Mooloolaba revealed the proposed location for another multistorey complex, equipped with food gardens and yoga studios, in July 2024.

Plans for the centre were submitted by Mariara Property Group Pty Ltd to the Sunshine Coast Council regarding a property at 68 to 78 Howard St, Nambour.

According to the development application, the existing commercial buildings on the Nambour site would be demolished to make way for a five-storey childcare centre, if the proposal is approved by council.

The complex would create about 150 childcare places and employ 23 staff members.

The application for the centre is still in progress.

Plans for a childcare centre on Carroll St in Nambour, set to accommodate 125 children, were approved by the council in April.

Another childcare centre, proposed for a site in Moffat Beach, is currently appealing a council rejection in the Planning and Environment Court.
