THE NT government has launched around-the-clock security at a notorious public housing complex in The Narrows in an effort to crack down on anti-social behaviour at the site.
It comes after Territory Families and Urban Housing Minister Kate Worden promised to introduce the measure at a heated community meeting late last month, where about 40 residents of The Narrows expressed their concerns about constant anti-social behaviour at the Shiers St public housing complex.
Ms Worden said the government had acted swiftly to put security in place at the complex, as a short-term measure to address locals’ concerns until the long-term future of the site could be determined.

“From Tuesday 6 April, a 24/7 security response is in place at the complex including onsite and roving security patrols, working with Public Housing Safety Officers, Transit Safety Officers, Northern Territory Police and Larrakia Nation to provide an increased presence and deterrent for anti-social behaviour in the vicinity, while a range of options are being looked at for the site,” she said.

The NT News understands the patrols will be carried out by a private security company.
Plans are under way to redevelop the Shiers St public housing complex, with the NT government considering options including converting it into seniors housing, establishing a mix of public and private housing or selling the site to a private developer.
As of January, vacant units are not being refilled.
