RESIDENTS in a Palmerston cul-de-sac want the council to install a locked gate to stop anti-social youth wreaking havoc in their neighbourhood.
A petition signed by 31 residents of Peckham Court and McPhee Place was tabled by Alderman Mick Spick at the last council meeting.
They are calling for a locked gate to be installed on a walkway between Peckham Court and Chung Wah Terrace.
“We, the residents of the suburb Gunn ... are tired of the uninvited individuals who access the opening in the fence during the day or at night to perform illegal or suspicious behaviour in and around our homes,” the petition reads.
“Your petitioners therefore humbly pray that the Northern Territory government work with City of Palmerston and install a locked gate ... which has access only via a code for local residents to use.”

A separate document pointed to four incidents in the area in the past 7½ years. The petitioners noted that while Palmerston council wanted to maintain laneways to enable active transport options, the nature of their neighbourhood meant a locked gate wouldn’t be a major impact on access.
“Due to the escarpment located at the end of Peckham Court, we believe the closure of this particular laneway will not impact on the active transport options within the vicinity of this area,” it read.
“With properties located on both McPhee Place and Peckham Court being subject to multiple break-ins, property damage and theft, we are under the belief with the closure of this laneway, both criminal and anti-social behaviours will be reduced within this particular area.”
