IT is clear the NT government has underestimated the near unquestionable faith Territorians have in the team that currently run the Howard Springs quarantine facility.

When the Howard Springs idea was first floated at the beginning of the pandemic the public had fears about COVID-19 escaping from the facility, including the unfounded claim that it could be spread by mosquitoes.

The National Critical Care and Trauma Response Centre proceeded to run a flawless quarantine facility.

A few months later, the AUSMATeers were back to run the international wing of the facility.

In the business of repatriating Australians, COVID-19 cases are inevitable. Yet any announcement of a new case in the international wing was met with indifference by the public.

AUSMAT is the best and they can handle it, so we have nothing to fear.

The NT government’s move to a single governance structure has created more anxiety among the people than they care to realise.

Apart from the lack of confidence in the NT government to capably take over from the NCCTRC, there are questions too about which magical portal authorities plan to pull 400 extra workers from.

The NT government needs to walk back this decision and keep AUSMAT, if not at least a core team of them, running the facility. For the sake of the Territory’s safety.
