Some may say that a day specifically celebrating the achievements and progress of women and girls in society is no longer needed. But, I think recent events have proven otherwise.
Today will also be a well-needed day for women and girls everywhere to stop and take stock, to acknowledge that although things have been hard, they have not stopped fighting for equality.
Inspirational Territory women like Tammy Fudge are perfect examples of this. Fighting and surviving breast cancer was not enough to hold Ms Fudge back from dedicating her life to providing better education for Territory kids.
The welcome news that sanitary products will now be available for all Territory students from Term 2, working to break down years of stigma and body shame felt by women and girls, is a great example of progress.

Although things like this remind women of how far they have come, today is also a day to get together and look at how far women and girls still have to go. And if these last few weeks have taught us anything, it’s that when women and girls support each other, that’s when change can really be made.
