THE NT Government’s decision to only make some suburbs of Melbourne hot spots, after one hotel worker contracted coronavirus, is a good one. Locking down entire cities is an over-the-top reaction to one person, to one case.

We need to keep Territorians safe. There is no question about that.

But our industries cannot survive if they cannot have confidence that business plans will continue.

In recent weeks the NT News has reported tourism operators are worried they'll struggle come the dry season. Despite thousands being spent to encourage Australians to holiday in the Territory, they’re reporting people are too nervous to book holidays, worried the borders will be slammed shut at the drop of a hat.

Airlines are constantly changing their flight patterns as borders shut, reopen and shut again.

We do not want coronavirus getting into the NT’s community but we cannot let our businesses struggle.

And after the year that was 2020, Territorians deserve the right to know if they go on holiday to see family they may not have seen in more than a year, they’ll likely be able to get home.

That’s why it’s important the Government continues with its system of only closing the border to places where coronavirus is known to be. Yesterday it would have been overkill to close to all of Melbourne when the one contracted case has only been to 10 suburbs.

This careful system is working. Keep it up.
