NSW will get 33 more playgrounds across 29 councils to improve access to green spaces throughout the state, with the pandemic entrenching the local park as a key community need for families.

The inclusive playspaces will cost the government $4 million in the fourth and final round of the Everyone Can Play program, with the funding to go towards making parks more accessible for revellers of all ages and abilities. Wollongong, Canada Bay, Goulburn, Georges River and Cumberland emerged the biggest winners, getting $200,000 each for parks and playgrounds.

“All communities should have access to great public spaces, and the Everyone Can Play program is providing people of all ages and abilities with places to come together and have fun,” planning and public spaces Minister Rob Stokes said.

The NSW government will also provide an additional $4m in a “dollar-for-dollar” matching exercise with local councils in Greater Sydney looking to improve their parks and bike paths.

Mr Stokes said that the NSW government would match the amounts provided by councils to help fund new and improved parks, cycleways and greenspaces.

“Last year, we awarded almost $4m to support 12 councils to deliver 13 projects and it’s now time for councils to nominate again for more projects,” Mr Stokes said.
