A world-class inclusive playground featuring slides, a discovery access bridge, log tunnels, a central natural play interaction space and more is in the works for Liverpool, with planning now underway to transform one of the region’s parks.
Lt Cantello Reserve in Hammondville has been chosen as the location of a new district-level play space and residents are invited to submit feedback on a draft concept plan released this week by Liverpool Council.
The massive new playground will cater for people of all ages and abilities, and is being developed in partnership with children's charity Variety.
Under the draft plans, it will feature a discovery access bridge, log tunnels, a central natural play interaction space, a mixture of seating, an all-access spin activity and amenities.
Construction is expected to begin in September with a proposed opening at the end of the year.
Liverpool Council chief executive Kiersten Fishburn said Lt Cantello Reserve was an ideal space for the playground.
“The site has suitable space for an inclusive-style playground whilst also maintaining a large area of passive space to include supporting infrastructure such as toilets, carparking and other features such as an off-leash dog park, picnic facilities, memorials and natural areas, all of which are integral for providing multipurpose parks that encourage optimum and shared use,” Ms Fishburn said.
“This exceptional and unique play space will exemplify and complement the local creek flora and fauna of the area.”
She said the play space will be an place where everybody was welcome.
“Liverpool is home to people from all over the world and as indicated in Liverpool’s community profile in 2016, 6.2 per cent of our population reported needing help in their day-to day lives due to disability.”
