Plans for the first stage of the Edmondson Park commuter carpark upgrade have been approved, with construction to begin mid-year.

The new multi-storey carpark will be built on the existing commuter carpark site south of Edmondson Park railway station and provide 1000 new spaces across six levels.

The southern carpark will be closed when construction begins and replaced with temporary parking options.

Plans are also underway for another 1000 spaces as part of the next stage.

The new carpark will include free parking for up to 18 hours under the Transport Park&Ride scheme, lift access, accessible parking spaces, pedestrian pathway upgrades, CCTV and lighting.

Transport for NSW is also looking at options for electric vehicle charging spaces and motorbike parking.

Detailed design work will begin before construction starts mid-year. The project is expected to be completed by mid-2021.

In a statement, Holsworthy state Liberal MP Melanie Gibbons said the upgrade was expected to create work for up to 80 workers per day.

Macquarie Fields state Labor MP Anoulack Chanthivong said he will be watching the project closely to make sure there are no delays.

“Our community has campaigned long and hard for their fair share. For too long this Liberal Government continued to ignore the needs of local commuters but our persistence has started to pay off.”

Plans have also been approved for a new multistorey commuter car park at nearby Leppington Station, which will get a boost of up to 1000 new spaces.
