THE red light/speed cameras on the Tiger Brennan Dr and Berrimah Rd intersection have already raked in about $2.5 million from lead-footed drivers since being installed in January — that’s equivalent to more than $12,000 in fines a day.
The three new cameras have pinged about 7200 motorists since going live on January 16 until August 1, adding $2,468,560 to Territory coffers.
About 95 per cent of these fines were due to speeding ($2,339,100) and the remaining five per cent were handed out to drivers caught running red lights ($129,460).
The cameras and lowered 80km/h speed limit were introduced as safety measures following a double fatal crash at the Tiger Brennan Dr and Berrimah Rd intersection last May.
The horrific crash claimed the lives of a seven-year-old boy and a 21-year-old father.
A NT Police spokesman said they were disappointed at the result seen in the early stages of operation.
“Given the horrific fatal crash at that location and the attention surrounding the change of speed limit at the location, along with the extensive awareness campaign prior to the cameras going live, it would appear that the message is not getting through,” he said.
“Hopefully once those fines filter out to those offenders, we will see a dramatic change of driver behaviour at that intersection, but hopefully on all roads across the NT.”
The NT’s current road toll stands at 15 compared to 20 this time last year.
The speed cameras on Tiger Brennan Dr and Berrimah Rd intersection are already proving to be the highest earners for the NT Government in fines with about $2.5 million in just over seven months.
In 2019, fixed red light and speed cameras across the NT captured about 8500 infringements and issued over $3.7 million in fines.
