THE new speed cameras on the Tiger Brennan Dr and Berrimah Rd intersection are on track to become the highest earning cameras in the Territory after issuing more than $600,000 in fines in six weeks — that’s equivalent to 37 infringements a day.

The three cameras on Tiger Brennan Drive at the corner of Berrimah Road had already racked up $619,120 in fines only six weeks after they went live on January 16.

During that period a whopping 1778 infringements were caught, the equivalent of 37 infringements each day.

A NT Police spokesman said they were disappointed at the result seen in the early stages of operation.

“Given the horrific fatal crash at that location and the attention surrounding the change of speed limit at the location, along with the extensive awareness campaign prior to the cameras going live, it would appear that the message is not getting through,” he said.

“Hopefully once those fines filter out to those offenders, we will see a dramatic change of driver behaviour at that intersection, but hopefully on all roads across the NT.”

In 2019, fixed red light and speed cameras across the NT captured 8486 infringements and issued $3,689,230 worth in fines — more than double the fines issued the pervious year.

The speed camera on the corner of Stuart Hwy and Ross Smith Ave were the top earners for the year, catching 1461 infringements and issuing $702,580 in fines.

The camera on Stuart Hwy and Westralia St was the second from the top, with 1519 infringements and $632,310 worth of fines.
