Speed and running a red light a factor in double fatal police believe

Police believe speed and a driver running a red light caused the double fatality in Darwin.

NT Police Commander Matt Hollamby addressed the media this afternoon about the collision that killed a seven-year-old child and a 21-year-old man this morning.

The crash happened on the intersection of Tiger Brennan Dr and Berrimah Rd around midnight last night.

Comdr Hollamby said the drivers of the two cars, a Toyota Rav 4 and a Ford Ranger are both in hospital and had not been spoken to yet.

“The investigation is just starting and it is a very serious crash, people have died so we expect it to take awhile,” he said.

“We are also investigating whether charges will be laid.

“Neither of the drivers have been spoken to. Obviously their health and welfare and medical treatment takes priority.”

The two deaths takes the Territory’s 2019 road toll to 13.
