However the concept is not lost completely, with the owners of Throb Nightclub saying they will be looking to an alternative location.

In a statement issued today, Throb’s Tim Palmer said “the tribe has spoken”.

He thanked those who supported the proposal for an open-air “sunset lounge” at East Point, but said organisers had listened to those who opposed it and decided to look for an alternative location.

One of those who opposed it was Chief Minister Michael Gunner who said he “wouldn’t encourage it” based off local feedback.

Mr Gunner said while he supported creativity among businesses, the proposed location was not suitable.

Mr Gunner said he didn’t anticipate applications for liquor licensing or approval from the Development Consent Authority to be accepted.

“I can’t see it passing the community test for both of those,” he said.

He suggested Throb partner with an existing outdoor venue, such as the Darwin Ski Club, instead.

Mr Palmer said without the new outdoor venue, Throb’s future was bleak with the club unable to comply with social distancing rules.

He said Throb would not be opening its CBD Smith Street venue tonight despite the further easing of coronavirus restrictions.

The Throb on Point Coastal Sunset Lounge initiative of Throb Nightclub was designed to help the longstanding business survive the economy crushing coronavirus pandemic.

Community members, including the Fannie Bay Equestrian Club (FBEC), opposed it due to a perceived lack of consultation and changing designs.

Darwin council and the NT Government also had to defend their involvement in the process, particularly after the council granted the venue a temporary permit during a confidential meeting.
