‘They love to lay down and chill out’: Foster mum says greyhounds are top dogs

The Greyhound Rehoming Association NT (GRANT) has put out a call for more foster carers and adoption owners as they prepare to take on a new influx of retiring racing greyhounds.
GRANT committee member Sarah Jackson said the organisation could expect to receive up to 40 new dogs throughout the year.

“We don’t have a shelter facility at all … so foster carers are really essential to be able to bring dogs into our program,” she said.
“It can be stressful for a dog to be moved around too much so we like them to go to a foster family where they can have some downtime for at least four weeks (before adoption) to help them transition.”
Foster carer Sara Rowe highly recommends fostering.
“I really enjoy a doggie presence in my life but I was unable to commit to actually adopting a dog or having a dog full time,” she said.
“Fostering was a really nice compromise.”

Despite their history of racing, Ms Rowe said greyhounds were very low maintenance dogs.
“You would think they need a lot of exercise but they don’t at all,” she said.
“A 20 minute walk once a day is enough for most greyhounds … they love to lay down and chill out.”
