Sustainable house day encouraging Territorians to add some green, solar and air flow to their home

WITH the battle against the build-up and the wet season underway, Sustainable House Day is an opportunity to look at those leading the way for inspiration.

Alawa resident Emma Lupin said she has tried to make her home as green as possible, relying on airflow and the surrounding environment for relief.

“We just wanted to build in (the downstairs) and thought ‘let’s do it with a bottle wall’, but because you want the airflow, you can’t have too many walls, it’s just the structure for the door,” she said.

“Sustainable building for the tropics is all about the air flow really, it’s all louvres.”

Ms Lupin said people could do their bit with veggie patch, water tanks or solar.

“My No. 1 if you’ve got the money would be solar,” she said. “One that’s really good without money is to grow greenery and trees because it cools (the house) down.”

This year’s Sustainable House Day has been transformed into an online event helping Australians make sustainable changes to their homes.

CoolMOB sustainability officer Lou De Mattia said the Alawa home used a suite of measures to create a cool, sustainable home.

“They’ve used the shell of the house to maximise what you can get from the local climate — outdoor bathrooms, outdoor living areas, extensive shading and edible garden, the use of louvres and fans,” she said.
