A POPULAR workhorse has been named the NT’s most at-risk of being stolen.
The Toyota HiLux was criminals’ vehicle of choice to steal, claiming the top three spots according to the National Motor Vehicle Theft Reduction Council.
A total of 75 utes were stolen in the past financial year.
The Toyota LandCruiser and Ford Ranger came in at spots four and five.
There was an increase in the number of cars stolen on the same time last year, with 670 incidents of theft in 2020/21 compared with 643 in 2019/20.
Twice as many HiLux vehicles were stolen this financial year, and LandCruisers and Ford Rangers saw similar increases in the number stolen.
The Territory’s figures however are dwarfed by that of other states, with more than 12,000 incidents of vehicle theft in Victoria alone. HiLux owner Natalie Wiggett said it was not a huge surprise.
“To a point I’m not surprised because there are a lot (of HiLux) in the Territory,” she said.
“But if mine was stolen I’d be devastated,” she said.
