A MAJOR disaster was miraculously avoided when a Toyota Hilux careered at high speed across multiple lanes of Bagot Rd during peak hour traffic, freakishly managing to miss a multitude of other both stationary and moving vehicles, before crashing into a shopfront.
Watch Commander Len Turner said the Hilux was travelling on McMillans Rd and failed to turn left onto Bagot Rd about 5pm on Thursday.
“The vehicle then just went straight ahead across all traffic that was coming, both sides, and crossed the divider, into the service lane and into the front of the Cash Converters,” Commander Turner said.
“As the vehicle travelled along Bagot, it went directly into the path of seven vehicles, which all missed them. That woman is very lucky.
“The 33-year-old female and her two-year-old daughter both suffered some head injuries and were taken to hospital where they received treatment.”
St Johns Ambulance Craig Garraway said the child suffered a serious head injury.
“We had paramedics, police and fire there along with our critical care paramedics and they were looking after the young child and got them to hospital,” Mr Garraway told ABC Darwin.
“I hope the little tacker is recovering well in hospital at the moment.
“It’s a long way across the other side of that road, it could have been a lot worse.”
Commander Turner said the car travelled at about 80km/h across the whole of Bagot Rd.
“It was just like in the movies. It’s a miracle that no other people were involved in that accident,” he said.
“They were wearing all of their safety seatbelts and did the right things.
“Why this car failed to negotiate and go straight, we’ll uncover that in the coming days or weeks.
“It [CCTV footage] is very impressive. (It) will make them buy a lottery ticket.”
Superintendent Daniel Shean said, “It is incredibly lucky no-one else was injured in this incident. Drivers are reminded to always drive with due care and attention”.
Police investigations are underway as to the cause of the crash.
