THE long awaited Palmerston Fire Station is a quarter of the way completed and will provide NT Fire and Rescue Service with the space to expand.

The fire station is on track to be completed early next year and will feature operation and meeting rooms, a training area, breathing apparatus room and workshop and communications tower.

NT Fire and Rescue Service chief fire officer Mark Spain said the current Palmerston fire station was old and not fit for purpose.

“This is one of those stations that will take us into the future, along with our new newly built Katherine Fire Station, and all the refurbs into our Darwin Fire Station,” Mr Spain said.

He said the Palmerston station was built in 1983 at a time when it was just men working at the station.

NT Police Minister Nicole Manison said the station would provide for Palmerston and the rural area for years to come.

“This is going to be using modern equipment, all the latest technology, and it’s going to have room for growth and expansion into the future,” she said.

Ms Manison said there was no plan as yet for the old fire station site on Emery Ave.

Infrastructure, Planning and Logistics Minister Eva Lawler said the project had created 240 jobs and would open in 2022.
