A FISHO has put himself in danger for an elusive barra at Rapid Creek by wading into the murky waters over the weekend.

The man was photographed about 6.30pm Sunday with a fishing rod in hand by a concerned onlooker.

The person, who did not want to be named, said they watched as the man fished for about half an hour before getting out.

“He didn’t catch any fish someone on the bank behind him caught a Barra and not him,” the person said.

“I thought he was risking his life and was very stupid for doing what he was doing, he was in the water for about 30 mins, he was the only one out in the water.” (sic)

Those keen to catch a fish can often be found wading deep into the waterway.

However those looking to snag a fish are warned that crocs inhabit the creek and have been caught by the NT Parks and Wildlife crocodile management team.

Senior Wildlife Ranger with the Crocodile Management Team, Tom Nichols, said it’s important to remind people that swimming in the Top End is risky at all times of the year.

“The perception that crocodiles are not around in the dry season is incorrect and dangerous. The team removed five crocodiles out of traps in the harbour in the past week,” he said.

“People are making the most of the beautiful weather, however you must always assume a large and potentially dangerous crocodile could be living in any body of water in the Top End.

“We live and play in croc country and there is no room for complacency. Just because you haven’t seen a crocodile in an area before does not mean one hasn’t moved in.

“Only a few weeks ago a 3.7m crocodile was sighted at the wharf. He was later caught in a trap around 10km away.”
