WELL, folks, it’s that time of year and our 120 Most Powerful Territorians list is back!

We’re counting down to the Territory’s most powerful person across 10 big days where controversy is certain to reign.

There will be some huge omissions from last year’s list and there will be plenty of people who make an appearance for the first time.

It’s been a massive year for the Territory and the world in 2020 with the coronavirus pandemic dominating the news and impacting our lives like we’ve never seen before.

Senator Sam McMahon has dropped 38 places on the NT News’ 2020 Most Powerful list.

In a sneak peek of who makes the 120-101 list tomorrow, we can confirm that Territory CLP Senator Sam McMahon comes in way down the list at No.109, dropping 38 places from last year’s ranking of No.71.

In part of their comments, the panel says: “As Senator for the Northern Territory who has a direct line to the Coalition Government, McMahon should be a lot higher on this list.

“Her personal life has been front and centre in the news in the past 12 months and while she’s doing her best to try and get some traction, Territorians don’t seem to be warming to her.

“... even the CLP’s rank and file have question marks on her future with the party.”

Former Territory Alliance leader Terry Mills copped the poison chalice of No.1 last year which didn’t end well for him.

His party won one seat in the election when Robyn Lambley won a tight contest in Araluen.

She has already defected from the party leaving Alliance with no representation in Territory Parliament.

Numbers 120-101 will be revealed Wednesday exclusively on ntnews.com.au while 81-100 will be revealed on Thursday.

The list counts down to numbers 1 & 2 which will be revealed on Friday, December 18.

Editor Matt Williams said the list would be the NT News’ best yet.

“The panel agonised over their decisions and who to put where; it’s a bloody tough ask when you’ve got so many impressive people who could make the list,” he said.

“But unlike our politicians who like to talk the talk, we like to walk the walk and we had to make some tough calls.

“There are plenty of people who made last year’s list who don’t get a guernsey this time around, which will be a shock to some of them.

“While everyone says they don’t really want to be on the list, deep down it’s something that’s really important to their profile and their standing in the community.

“We love the debate when the list rolls out, there’s always plenty of people who disagree with our panel’s choices but that’s half the fun of it.”
