THERE is a 14 year gap between how long Darwin residents are expected to live depending which their suburb they live in, new data shows.
According to median age at death figures from Torrens University’s Public Health Information Development Unit (PHUDI), released today, people living in Casuarina are likely to live the longest of anyone in the Darwin area, with a median lifespan of 76 years.
Inner Darwin and Nightcliff residents are also likely to be long-lived, with both boasting median lifespans of 70 years.
At 62 years the Driver/Gray/Moulden/Woodroffe area had the shortest median lifespan of any suburb in the Darwin area, followed by 65 years in Litchfield and 66 years in Marrara/ Berrimah.

In other parts of the Northern Territory, the median lifespan was 66 years in Alice Springs, 65 years in Katherine and 58 years in Barkly/Tennant Creek.
People in the remote Alice Springs region had the shortest lifespans in the Territory, at 54 years.
PHUDI director Professor John Glover said a wide range of factors contributed to the variation in lifespans between different suburbs.
“Variations in the median age at death between suburbs are impacted by many factors including socio-economic disadvantage, as influenced by unemployment, education, housing and income,” he said.
“Events like road traffic accidents among young people lower the median age, and the location of residential aged care facilities raise the median age.”

“However, the strong influence of socio-economic disadvantage is clearly evident in the pattern of potential years of life lost across Darwin’s suburbs, with deaths of young males of note in many outer suburbs.”
He said he hoped the data would highlight the need for preventive measures in suburbs with lower lifespans.
