THE NT has always had a colourful history.

From sex on the Speaker’s chair in Parliament House to sending constituents sexually explicit videos, here are some of our most notable sex scandals.

MASTURBATING VIDEOS FROM PARLIAMENT BATHROOM

The NT’s Sport and Recreation Minister in 2016, Nathan Barrett was tipped to become the CLP’s next Treasurer.

Then Minister for Sport and Recreation Nathan Barrett was caught sending a video of himself masturbating to a constituent.

However, as the NT News revealed at the time, he was caught sending a video of himself masturbating in a Parliament bathroom to a female constituent, who claimed she did not solicit the messages.

He resigned from Cabinet the day the story in the NT News was published.

POLITICIAN, POLITICAL STAFFER EMBROILED IN COCAINE SEX SCANDAL

Labor backbencher Mark Turner lost his position in caucus in 2021 after details emerged of an election night sex romp with a sex worker.

In the text messages, the woman explained to the MLA she had a bad batch of cocaine which had made her feel unwell.

There were several exchanges about their sexual experiences and desires.

A picture of a fifth floor staffer’s penis — not the sitting MLA — has also emerged in a separate exchange.

There is no suggestion Mr Turner used illegal substances.

DEPUTY CHIEF MINISTER’S AFFAIR

Former Deputy Chief Minister Willem Westra van Holthe spoke out about his marriage breakdown, saying he was “shattered” his personal life has been broadcast all over Facebook.

Former CLP minister Willem Westra van Holthe was “shattered” after his marriage troubles were publicised.

The local Member for Katherine sat down with the NT News to “clear the air” on rumour and innuendo that had been circulating as a result of his estranged wife, Jennie Westra van Holthe, making public Facebook posts on the issue.

“Feeling absolutely gutted. Willem Westra van Holthe is with his new girlfriend on the Gold Coast. Flying back to Darwin…together tomorrow. Flew her in from Vietnam last Saturday. Marriage over!” she wrote.

NOVA’S TIM TAM

Former Senator Nova Peris sought taxpayers’ money to help her to carry out an extra-marital sexual tryst with Olympic medallist Ato Boldon in 2010, an NT News investigation revealed.

Ms Peris, who was working as a communication officer with the Australian Institute of Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Studies at the time and as ambassador for Athletics Australia, sought funds from Athletics Australia and other sources to pay for Mr Boldon’s trip to Australia from Los Angeles to take part in a 10 day official “Jump Start to London” program for young athletes.

She also used that trip to carry out a “just like a Tim-tam... black on black” affair with Mr Boldon. She was married to Daniel Batman at the time.

SEX ON THE SPEAKER’S CHAIR

A former Labor Party press secretary told of having sex with his girlfriend on the Speaker’s table at the Legislative Assembly.

Andrew Kilvert, 34, had finished his last day at work and had been drinking at a going-away party in the ministerial offices before the incident.

Mr Kilvert and his girlfriend, identified only as Louise, had first tried the Speaker’s Italian leather and Tasmanian blackwood chair — but found it too uncomfortable.

So they moved to the Speaker’s table.

CLAIMS OF SEXUAL HARASSMENT AGAINST DEPUTY SPEAKER

FORMER deputy parliamentary Speaker Len Kiely was under pressure to resign amid serious allegations of sexual harassment.

A female security guard at the cricket match between Australia A and Pakistan A at Marrara’s TIO Stadium on July 11 filed a complaint with the NT Government that Mr Kiely made several inappropriate remarks after being refused alcohol in an official NT Government corporate box paid for by the taxpayer.

Among the remarks Mr Kiely is alleged to have made to the security guard was, “I have a very long tongue and I could use it on you and make you a very happy woman”.

POLICE COMMISSIONER MISUSES POWER FOR LOVER

NT Police Commissioner John McRoberts’ spectacular “fall from grace”, as Justice Dean Mildren described it, was as remarkable as his rise through police ranks had been.

In the space of five years McRoberts went from being the NT Police Commissioner to being locked in a cell 23 hours a day for his own safety, allowed out into a common area only when all the other prisoners in his unit were in their cells.

Unknown to anyone, McRoberts and travel agent Xana Kamitsis — who was later convicted for fraud and corruption — started a secret affair, exchanging gifts, flattery and more, although there was never any allegation of a corrupt connection between the gifts the two exchanged and the business NT Police, and McRoberts, directed towards Kamitsis.

LOVE TRIANGLE FEUD MAKES ITS WAY TO COURT

A high-profile Darwin businessman and former political candidate were caught up in a bitter love feud.

While the NT News chose not to name the duo, the scandal is understood to have first gone public at a Darwin Waterfront bar late 2020 when a woman confronted the couple.

It later led to one of the parties applying for a restraining order against another in December the same year.
