UPDATE – 12PM: Chief Minister Michael Gunner has announced the end of lockdown in Greater Darwin and Alice Springs from 1pm Friday, but with some restrictions.

The Greater Darwin area has been in lockdown since 1pm on Sunday after a miner at the Granites Gold Mine in Central Australia tested positive for Covid-19 last week and a man in Palmerston subsequently returned a positive result.

The region’s lockdown was originally planned to lift at 1pm today.

Alice Springs has been in lockdown since 1pm on Wednesday.

The town’s lockdown was initially scheduled to end at 1pm tomorrow, but will now also end at 1pm today.

However, some restrictions will remain in place in Greater Darwin and Alice Springs until 1pm next Friday, July 9, including the wearing of masks where it isn’t possible to physically distance and the continued use of QR codes at venues.

The NT News understands Mr Gunner is attending national cabinet, then a meeting of local NT health officials, before holding his media conference at around 11am.

Optimism that Greater Darwin would come out of lockdown was hindered by the late news on Thursday that a man who later tested positive for Covid-19 visited a Stuart Park Corner Store to buy cigarettes.
