NT POLICE Commissioner Jamie Chalker and former parliamentary speaker Kezia Purick are among the witnesses expected to appear at the trial of former NT Police Assistant Commissioner Peter Bravos, after it resumes tomorrow.

Bravos has pleaded not guilty in the Supreme Court to two counts of rape dating back to 2004 when he was a member of the drug squad.

On the first day of the trial last week, Crown prosecutor Tami Grealy read from a list of 44 witnesses, which also included Children’s Commissioner Colleen Gwynne, former Territory MLA Willem Westra van Holthe and barrister Georgia McMaster.

Ms Grealy drew a distinction between 38 witnesses who “will be called to give evidence” and the six remaining witnesses “the prosecution expects to call” with Ms Purick and Ms Gwynne the latter.

The first witness to be called last Tuesday was the woman who was allegedly raped and cannot be named while two other witnesses’ names are the subject of a suppression order.

Jurors have so far heard from 12 witnesses including current and former NT Police officers and a clinical psychologist.

The highest-ranking serving police officer so far was Commander James O’Brien, who gave evidence on Friday, rubbishing claims a “black book” of sexual conquests had been circulating in the drug squad at the time of the alleged rapes.

Cmdr O’Brien said if there was such a book doing the rounds he “would have known about it” and any suggestion betting odds were discussed via the squad’s computer systems instead was “equally ridiculous”.

In his opening address to jurors last week, senior Crown prosecutor Nick Papas QC said Bravos and the woman were both guests at a boozy annual emergency services ball on the night of the alleged rapes in November 2004.

He said Bravos and the woman later ended up at Mindil Beach Casino but she was refused entry due to her intoxication so they both went back to his house in The Narrows.

Mr Papas said it quickly became apparent Bravos’s wife and children weren’t at home and the pair continued drinking and ended up fully clothed in the pool where Bravos “made advances towards her which she rebuffed”.

He later gave her a T-shirt to replace her soaked ball gown before allegedly raping her twice while she was passed out on the bed.
